Why do I have bad breath, and is there a treatment?

  • Burrow Welchel & Culp Orthodontics
  • March 26, 2015

If a thorough brushing and a breath mint are ineffective in your fight against bad breath, you may have a serious condition that, if not looked into, could cause detrimental effects to your teeth, mouth and gums. This condition is called xerostomia. More commonly known as dry mouth, medications are one of the most common causes of the disorder.

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, more than 400 prescription medications, including some developed for asthma relief, depression and cholesterol reduction, can cause xerostomia – a condition that is a major cause of halitosis (bad breath). The condition also can cause cracked lips, cavities, bleeding gums and canker sores, leading to the deterioration of oral and dental health. Severe cases of dry mouth can inhibit the ability to speak or swallow.

Other causes of xerostomia include diseases such as diabetes and undergoing radiation therapy or chemotherapy treatment for cancer. However, the disorder is often ignored until serious oral damage occurs.
Dental researchers have discovered that saliva contains natural antibacterial agents, which help to keep your mouth healthy and neutralize bacteria that can cause bad breath. If you don’t have enough saliva, you become more susceptible to dental problems, such as an increase in plaque buildup and bleeding gums. This as you know can lead to other problems as well

Treatment of dry mouth depends on what’s causing the condition, then taking the appropriate steps to minimize the symptoms. Unfortunately for people with dry mouth caused by medication use, little can be done to correct it. However, if you suffer from xerostomia, many medical and dental professionals agree that you should use products specifically developed for the treatment of the condition. Some of these products are Biotene and Oral Balance products by Laclede Inc. These dry mouth treatment products contain a patented enzyme system developed to treat and restore health to a dry mouth and are available over the counter. Believe it or not these treatments can be a real life saver for your overall health if you are doing all that you can to take care of your oral health.

Brushing your teeth twice a day with a Dry Mouth Toothpaste such as Biotene or prescription Prevident by Colgate will help inhibit harmful bacteria in your mouth and fight the causes and effects of bad breath and gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums. It helps reduce bacteria and oral irritants because it contains salivary enzymes that boost and replenish saliva’s own defenses. Dry Mouth treating mouthwash help as well. These mouthwashes are alcohol-free, which helps freshen and moisten dry, sensitive tissue in your mouth. Due to its antibacterial enzymes, it kills the bacteria that cause oral infections and gingivitis.

Dry mouth sufferers also are advised to avoid starchy foods, floss daily and have a dental checkup at least twice a year. Here at Burrow Welchel & Culp Orthodontics, we want you to have the resources you need for an awesome healthy smile. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us via our website or give us a call.

Erika L.
It’s always great visit for my daughter’s appointments at Burrows! My children and I adore Dr. Culp every time. And it’s always great to see LeAnn! She’s always been so welcoming from day one! Dr. Culp is so knowledgeable and breaks everything down step by step. I’m never unsure about what happened in the appt or what the next steps are moving forward. My daughter is currently finishing up her treatment and my son is next 😊. I always speak highly of them when someone mentions braces and they’re my FIRST and only referral lol.

We currently moved to Charlotte and although they have several locations I REFUSED to change from our Rock Hill location with Dr. Culp! Thank you to the staff there for making each visit smooth!
Response from the owner:Hi, Erika. We are thrilled to learn that you had a positive experience with us!

Lily (operations manager) is a true angel! She took the time to really listen to me..not just as a patient, but as a person. I truly appreciated how understanding and patient she was while helping me find the best solutions to fit both my treatment and financial needs. She made everything work seamlessly without ever compromising the business. Her kindness, professionalism, and genuine care made the entire experience so much better.

Also, a huge shout-out to Dr. Zamora, who has been an absolute gem! He’s a wonderful orthodontist skilled, caring, and always makes you feel comfortable and confident about your treatment.

I’ll be honest,my experience here hasn’t always been 100% perfect, but Lily and Dr. Zamora have turned things around for me. I’m so grateful for the care and attention they’ve shown. I still have some time left in the process prayerfully it continues to go smoothly .

Understanding the Causes of Bad Breath

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be caused by a variety of factors. One common cause is poor oral hygiene, which allows bacteria to build up in the mouth and produce foul-smelling gases. Other causes include dry mouth, certain foods and drinks, smoking, and underlying medical conditions such as gum disease or sinus infections. Identifying the root cause of your bad breath is the first step in finding an effective treatment.

It's important to note that bad breath can also be a symptom of more serious health issues, such as diabetes, liver disease, or respiratory infections. If your bad breath persists despite proper oral hygiene habits, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

Treatment Options for Bad Breath

There are several treatment options available for bad breath, depending on the underlying cause. Improving your oral hygiene routine, including brushing and flossing regularly, can help eliminate bacteria and improve the smell of your breath. Using mouthwash or chewing sugar-free gum can also help freshen your breath temporarily.

If dry mouth is the cause of your bad breath, staying hydrated and using saliva-stimulating products can help alleviate symptoms. In some cases, your healthcare provider may recommend prescription medications or specialized mouthwashes to address the underlying cause of your bad breath. Remember, addressing the root cause of your bad breath is key to finding a long-term solution for fresher breath.
