Accidents happen, and sometimes brackets can break. But don’t worry—if this happens during your orthodontic treatment, you can still stay on track! Here’s what to do if a bracket breaks, ensuring your treatment continues smoothly:
1. Stay Calm
First, don’t panic. A broken bracket is a common occurrence and won’t necessarily derail your treatment.
2. Assess the Situation
Check to see if the bracket is completely detached from the wire or if it’s still partially attached. If it’s completely off, save it in a safe place to bring to your next appointment.
3. Protect Your Mouth
If the broken bracket is causing discomfort, you can cover it with a piece of orthodontic wax to protect your mouth from irritation.
4. Avoid Tightening or Adjusting the Bracket
Don’t try to fix or adjust the bracket yourself. If it’s loose but still attached, gently push it back into place using a clean cotton swab or the back of a spoon.
5. Schedule a Visit
Call your orthodontist as soon as possible to schedule a repair appointment. In many cases, broken brackets can be quickly fixed during a routine visit.
